Tractor-trailer rolls on Pittsburgh bridge

Drivers on a local Pittsburgh bridge earlier this week were fortunate to escape harm when a tractor-trailer rolled over. The incident, which took place on the lower deck of the Fort Pitt Bridge during morning rush hour, resulted in traffic being unable to get through for several hours.

When the truck rolled, it collided with another vehicle, a car, crunching it between the truck and the guardrail. While in many cases this incident might result in serious injuries or even death, miraculously neither the driver of that car nor the driver of the truck was hurt.

The fact that trucks are so much heavier than the average car makes it especially dangerous to be involved in a collision with one. When they do occur, while it is not uncommon for the truck driver to make it through without an injury, occupants of other cares usually do not fare as well.

Law enforcement does not yet know what caused the truck to crash. While speed may have played a role, the driver of the truck has his own ideas regarding what happened. He indicated that his load of lime powder shifted as the truck came around the bend.
