If you are hosting a party offer plenty of non-alcoholic beverages and try serving a hearty meal or heavy hors d’oeuvre. You may want to stop serving alcohol one hour before the end of the party and never serve anyone who is underage. As the host, consider providing designated drivers for your guests or call a cab service for them.

If you are going out to a bar or club on New Year’s Eve, always plan ahead if you expect to drink. Designate a driver or program the number for your local cab service into your phone. Never drink and drive or get into the car with someone who has been drinking. When possible, plan on staying the night where you are celebrating the New Year countdown. Remember to consume plenty of food if you plan on drinking alcohol. Try and avoid mixing alcohol with carbonated or energy drinks; the carbonation and caffeine will make you feel more sober than you actually are which can lead to more consumption. Also, only time will sober a person up; coffee and energy drinks will only make you feel more alert but will not eliminate the alcohol content in your body.
