school busWith the beginning of the 2018 school year approaching, it is more important than ever for students, bus drivers and other motorists to be alert and cautious while on the road.

To ensure the safety of our students, drivers should know Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Laws.

According to Just Drive PA, Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Laws are as follows:

  • Motorists must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have red lights flashing and the stop arm extended.
  • Motorists must stop when they are behind a bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped with its red lights flashing.
  • Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn and all children have reached safety.
  • If there is a physical barrier such as a grassy median, guide rail or concrete barrier separating oncoming traffic from the bus, motorists in opposing lanes may proceed without stopping.
  • Motorists should not begin driving until all children have reached a safe place.

If a driver is found guilty of disobeying these laws, they could face a $250.00 fine, five points on their driving record and a 60 -day license suspension.

Students can also help ensure their own safety when getting on and off the bus by following these safety tips:

  • Students should get to the bus stop early to avoid rushing.
  • Always wait until the bus has come to a complete stop before walking toward it.
  • If you must cross the street, look both ways to make sure there is no moving traffic from either direction.
  • Always cross in front of the bus so the driver can see you.
  • Remain in your seat while on the bus at all times.
  • Keep all hands and feet inside the bus.
  • Never get off at a stop that is not yours.
  • Students who walk to school should be accompanied by an adult until they are 10 years old.
  • Encourage children to walk in a group to school.
  • Teach children what to do if they are approached by a stranger while walking.
