The accident happened around 2 p.m. According to witnesses and video footage, the buses were driving fast and switching lanes in a reckless manner. The two Port Authority bus drivers were gesturing to one another before their buses made contact and lost control.
The attorney for the female driver whose bus crashed over the hillside, says the accident is in fact due to a mechanical defect in the bus. The driver states that the bus began “shimmying and shaking” before she lost control. She reports that the back of the bus began to skid then it veered off of the road.
The Port Authority bus went over the hillside and landed in the 3900-block of Evergreen Avenue on the North Side. The driver was injured in the accident. Thankfully, there were no passengers on the bus at the time.
The driver of the other bus drove away from the scene and did not report the accident. This is not the first time the Port Authority driver has left the scene of an accident. In 2011, the driver was charged with hitting another vehicle and leaving the scene. The charges were later dropped.
An official from the Port Authority says both drivers could face termination. No charges have been filed yet.
