Prior to the accident, police said they received calls from concerned motorists who witnessed the driver driving recklessly on the road. Many of those witnesses stopped at the accident scene to report to police what they had seen.
The driver of the car refused treatment and also refused to be tested for drugs at the scene. He was later charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The driver of the Port Authority bus and the three passengers were all taken to nearby hospitals. Early reports said the victims suffered head and neck injuries.
In most accidents that result from a drunk or drugged driver, criminal charges will be filed. In addition, the victim of the accident may pursue a civil claim for his or her injuries.
