Thanksgiving, and the days surrounding the holiday, are some of the most dangerous days for driving. An increase in drunk drivers and vehicles on the road can make the holidays turn tragic.

In Pennsylvania, car accidents will rise over the next three days. The days surrounding Thanksgiving are known as some of the most dangerous and deadly. In 2018, Pre-Thanksgiving (the day before) had 2,164 crashes, Thanksgiving Day had 1,427 crashes and Black Friday (the day after) had 1,532 crashes. Out of the 5,123 crashes over those three days, there were 37 fatalities.

An increase in alcohol consumption and the number of vehicles on the road, may be to blame for the increase in crashes.

The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism estimate that two to three times more people die as a result of an alcohol related accident over the holiday than any other time during the year.

You can help keep this Thanksgiving safe by doing your part.

  • If you plan on consuming alcohol, make sure you have a designated driver, Uber or a bus service lined up ahead of time. Remember even one drink can increase the risk of an accident and receiving a DUI.
  • Expect an increase in traffic so give yourself plenty of time when traveling to avoid speeding.
  • Eliminate all distractions while behind the wheel.
  • Make sure your vehicle is ready for the weather.
