The incident occurred this past weekend as a trailer, which was being pulled by a Jeep, traveled through some woods. As it was heading down a hill something happened to cause the Jeep and trailer to barrel down the hill and slam into surrounding trees. The accident resulted in everyone who was on the trailer being thrown from it.
More than 20 people were hurt in the accident and one, a 17-year-old high school student, suffered such severe head injuries that she died. Other injured individuals were transported to the hospital but the state fire marshal’s office reported that none of those suffered injuries that were life-threatening.
As is the case with virtually any type of serious motor vehicle accident, investigators are looking into what caused the incident to occur. It is believed that a mechanical issue with the Jeep was to blame for the vehicle being unable to stop. In addition, investigators are also looking into other factors that may have contributed to the accident occurring. Specifically, they are wondering whether the wagon was overloaded on that night.
Though it is too soon to say, it is possible that those who were hurt in the crash might file a personal injury lawsuit to try to recoup compensation for their injuries. Similarly the family of the girl who died might file a wrongful death lawsuit.
