Highway Fatality Numbers Increase for the First Quarter of 2012

According to statistics recently released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), however, the first quarter of 2012 was particularly deadly: across the United States, an estimated 7,630 people died in car accidents. This number is a 13.5 percent increase from the same period in 2011. Traditionally, the crash fatality rate in the beginning of the year is lower than the rest of the year.

Officials have no ready explanation for the high number of fatal car accidents in the beginning of this year, but some point to the weather. Last year’s winter was particularly mild and, because of the warm weather, more people were on the road.
