SSA No Longer Mailing Paper Checks: What SSD and SSI Recipients Need to Know
If you receive Social Security Disability (SSD) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits it is important to know that the Social Security Administration (SSA) has stopped mailing paper checks. This change affects everyone who receives federal benefits including retirement benefits through Social Security.

Start A Free EvaluationThe SSA now requires all benefit payments to be made electronically. This policy is meant to improve efficiency, reduce fraud and ensure timely payments. If you or a loved one still expects to receive a paper check you will need to switch to an approved electronic payment method as soon as possible.
What Are Your Options?
There are two main ways to receive your Social Security payments:
- Direct Deposit
The most common and secure method. Your payments are automatically deposited into your checking or savings account on your payment date. - Direct Express® Debit Card
If you do not have a bank account you can receive your benefits on a prepaid debit card. The Direct Express® card is issued by Comerica Bank and allows you to access your funds without needing a traditional bank account.
Why This Matters for SSD and SSI Recipients
Missing the switch to electronic payments could result in delays or missed payments. If the SSA does not have your correct banking information or if you have not signed up for the Direct Express® card, your benefits could be held until you take action.
At our law firm we know how important it is for you to receive your benefits without interruption.
