The SSA offers two benefits programs to assist individuals with disabilities that prevent them from working. You may qualify for one or both programs, depending on your unique circumstances:
- Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI): To qualify for SSDI, you must generally have a terminal condition or a disability that will prevent you from performing substantial gainful activity (SGA) for at least one year. According to the SSA, the 2025 monthly earnings limit for SGA is $1,620. You must also have a sufficient work history and paid into the Social Security insurance program.
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI): According to the SSA, as of 2025, individuals must generally make less than $1,620 per month and have less than $2,000 in assets to qualify for SSI. These limits may be higher for qualifying couples or those with children. There is no work history requirement for SSI.
What Disabilities Qualify for SSD Benefits?
Nearly any condition that prevents you from performing SGA may qualify you for SSD benefits. The SSA Blue Book includes a list of specific conditions that may qualify for benefits, including:
- Musculoskeletal disorders, such as spinal stenosis, limb amputation, or non-healing fractures
- Respiratory disorders, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or cystic fibrosis (CF)
- Digestive disorders, such as chronic liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or intestinal failure
- Neurological disorders, such as epilepsy, stroke, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, or brain tumors
- Mental health disorders, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Immune system disorders, such as lupus, vasculitis, scleroderma, or psoriatic arthritis
Merely being diagnosed with a condition in the Blue Book does not necessarily qualify you for benefits—you must also prove you cannot work due to the severity of your condition, and that treatments and/or medications are not adequate to control its symptoms.
Even if your condition is not included in the Blue Book, you may still qualify for benefits. To learn whether you may qualify, contact Berger and Green today.

Unfortunately, few SSD claims are approved on the first try. If the SSA denies your claim, you are not alone, and you don’t have to take “no” for an answer. You can file an appeal with assistance from Berger and Green. One of our Bridgeport Social Security Disability appeals attorneys will walk you through the entire appeals process, which may include one or more of the following steps:
- Reconsideration: A new Disability Determination Services representative will review your application and decide whether the original representative made a mistake in denying your claim.
- ALJ Hearing: Your Bridgeport Social Security Disability benefits lawyer will represent you in front of a Judge and ask them to grant you benefits.
- Appeals Council Review: If the ALJ still denies your claim, the Appeals Council can review your case and determine whether the ALJ acted in error.
- Federal Lawsuit: If necessary, your Bridgeport SSD attorney can take your case all the way to federal court to fight for the Disability benefits you deserve.
Unfortunately many people who receive a denial fail to file an appeal. Because deadlines are short and the process is complex we advise you to speak with a lawyer. Let our legal team at Berger and Green put our extensive experience and knowledge to work for you.
You need an attorney with the experience and dedication to give your case the care it deserves.
