Child delivery complications can happen to anyone and no parent is able to prevent them. Erb’s Palsy is a birth injury that affects approximately one or two babies per every 1,000 births. It is caused by an injury to the brachial plexus, also known as the nerves surrounding the shoulder. This type of injury can happen when excessive pulling on the shoulders is done when the baby is exiting the birth canal.
Erb’s Palsy can be distinguished by weakness or paralysis of the arm. The nerves that are affected are responsible for feeling in the hand, fingers and arm. Some cases of Erb’s Palsy are due to stretching of the nerves and may heal six to twelve months after delivery. However, if the nerves are torn, they may not completely heal on their own and will result in surgery and therapy.
If you or someone you know have children who have suffered a birth injury such as Erb’s Palsy that could be caused by an error made by your medical team, you may have a medical malpractice claim.
Since Erb’s Palsy is caused by an injury at birth, it is immediately apparent if your child is experiencing any impairments. However, the extent of the injury may not be known for some time after birth. At Berger and Green we gain a complete understanding of your child’s short and long-term needs.
