Two-year-old child killed by dog in West Mifflin

After the pit bull bit the young girl, she was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital. She later died at the hospital because of her injuries. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

No information has been released on what prompted the attack and who owns the pit bull. An investigation is ongoing to determine if charges will be filed.

According to the American Humane Association, there are on average, an estimated 4.7 million dog bite incidents that occur in the United States each year. Of that 4.7 million, 50% of dog attacks involve children under 12 years old.

The reason that young children are more susceptible to these injuries may be their age. Children might not interpret certain signs that mean a dog is happy or angry that an adult may understand more easily.

If a dog has bitten you or a loved one, it is important to contact a personal injury attorney to discuss your legal rights. Dog bites can cause serious injuries such as disfigurement and scarring. These attacks can also be emotionally traumatizing for an individual, especially a young child.
