What You Need to Know about Rideshare Accidents

Rideshare programs like Uber and Lyft have become a popular choice of travel; however, accidents involving these programs happen more often than you may think.

These rideshare options offer many convenient benefits to those who are looking for a way to get to their destinations, but as with any type of driving, there is always a risk.

Drivers for Uber and Lyft have very little restrictions when it comes to how long they are allowed to drive for. This can lead to fatigued and distracted drivers.

After a car accident, many may wish to pursue a personal injury claim against the at fault party to recover damages sustained in that crash.

If you have been hurt or injured in any type of accident including Uber and Lyft, you are entitled to compensation for damages. As a passenger you do not have to prove liability.  This means you do not have to prove that you were not at fault for the accident.

Your initial reaction may be to sue the rideshare program itself such as Uber and Lyft, but that is not always possible.

Many rideshare programs view their drivers as independent contractors. This means you would be filing a claim through the at fault driver’s’ insurance, rather than who they work for.

Since these types of claims can be complex, it is a good idea to have experienced representation on your side.

Steps to Take After a Rideshare Accident

  • Seek medical attention for your injuries.
  • Stay at the scene until help arrives.
  • Call the police so a proper police report is filed.
  • Take photos of the scene.
  • Exchange information.
  • Take screenshots of your Uber or Lyft receipts.
  • Consult or hire an attorney before speaking to the insurance companies.

Rideshare accident cases can become complex. There may be multiple parties involved and hard to find evidence.  An experienced personal injury attorney can review the accident and let you know what your options are.
