Mazda Recalls 58,000 Vehicles

Product Liability

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the auto manufacturer Mazda, is recalling 58,000 2015-2016 Mazda 6 models due to a defective circuit that could cause the airbags to deactivate and power assisted steering to fail.

The recall comes 21 months after Mazda was informed of the problem.

On December 1, 2015, Mazda received a report notifying them of the issue. Eight days later they fixed the issue on their assembly lines.  Mazda did not issue a recall, they decided to monitor the problem because they felt “the safety risk was low.”

In July, Mazda met with the NHTSA to “discuss the failure mechanism and circumstances of the failure modes.” Mazda then voluntarily issued a recall two months later.

Under federal regulations, once Mazda was aware of the issue, they should have informed federal officials of their recall within 5 business days.

At this time, Mazda says they are unaware of any injuries or accidents due to the defect.

Recovering compensation after an injury from a defective product

It is a manufacturer’s responsibility to make sure their products are safe for consumers.  If someone is injured due to a defective product, a product liability claim may exist.  A claim may be pursued to pay for damages caused by the defective product such as medical bills, missed time from work and pain and suffering.
