Speeding Up the Process

In honor of the Veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, the Social Security Administration has improved the process of applying for and receiving a Social Security Disability decision for wounded veterans. To be eligible for expedited processing of your disability claim you must have become disabled while on active military service on or after October 1, 2001, regardless of where the injury occurred.

There is great need for the program, as evidenced by the 3 million veterans who the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports as having a disability related to military service. In response to this, the Social Security Administration and the Department of Veterans Affairs have implemented the Wounded Warriors program in order to aid claimants whose disabilities occurred during active duty. The Social Security Administration is now working with the Department of Veterans Affairs to speed up the gathering of medical evidence.

SSD benefits can be applied for either while in a military status or after discharge. This means that military servicemen and woman can receive SSD benefits even while receiving military pay or in a treatment facility or rehabilitation program.
