Meeting the Definition of “Disabled” Based on an Impairment Listing

The SSA publishes a book—known as the Blue Book—of impairing conditions and the criteria you must meet for each one. Pancreatic gland disorders fall under Section 9.00. However, since this type of disorder affects a number of body areas and their functions, this section actually points you to other areas of the Blue Book. If you have a pancreas gland disorder, you could qualify for benefits under:

• Section 4.00, if you suffer from cardiovascular problems; or
• Section 5.00, if your disorder causes digestive issues; or
• Section 11.00, if you have neurological impairments; or
• Section 12.00, if you also have a mental illness.

For example, pancreatitis often causes debilitating pain, stomach upset, and unexplained weight loss. If you are suffering from these side effects, you might be able to qualify based on Section 5.08—assuming you meet the criteria listed there.

What to Do If You Do Not Meet a Listing in the Blue Book

If you do not meet an impairment listing in the Blue Book, you could still qualify for benefits. You will just need to do so based on your Residual Functional Capacity (RFC). Your RFC is an evaluation of your ability to work despite your pancreas gland disorder and the related symptoms it causes. Your RFC shows:

• The type of work you can do; and
• How often you can do this work; and
• How long you can do this work.

If your RFC evaluation shows you cannot work your previous job or another job you might be qualified for, you will likely receive approval for disability benefits.

There are three ways the SSA can evaluate your RFC:

• Someone from Disability Determination Services completes your evaluation based on your medical evidence, application information, and other documents; or
• Your doctor completes the evaluation based on their knowledge of your case and your medical records; or
• Another doctor examines you and completes your evaluation based on this exam.

Meeting the Technical Qualifications for Benefits

In addition to meeting the medical criteria for benefits, you must also satisfy the technical qualifications for SSDI or SSI. If you meet these technical qualifications, you will probably receive benefits. Otherwise, the SSA might issue a technical denial for your application.

The SSA could issue a technical denial if you:

• Leave questions blank on the application; or
• Provide a name or birth date that does not match your Social Security Number; or
• Do not have enough work credits or recent employment to satisfy the requirements for SSDI; or
• You do not meet the income or asset requirements for SSI.
