What You Need to Know About SSD Programs

Social Security Disability has two programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). While they serve similar functions, there are some key differences between the programs. In order to apply for SSDI, you must have the required number of work credits and meet the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) definition of disabled. Applicants typically need a minimum of 20 credits to be eligible for SSDI, although an applicant’s age can influence this requirement.

SSI is a program for disabled individuals with low income and few resources. This program does not have work requirements, but the value of your resources, along with potential forms of income, could affect how much you receive.

Defining Disability

When it comes to defining disability, the SSA has strict rules. The complex definitions and requirements can mean that people are denied benefits, even if they have a diagnosed medical condition. People who are disabled must:

• Be unable “to engage in any substantial gainful activity (SGA)” because of their condition.
• Have a condition that will prevent them from working for 12 months or more OR have a condition that will be fatal.

Many types of conditions could make you eligible for benefits. The SSA has a list of disabilities, known as the Blue Book, with the medical criteria for evaluating these conditions. It is important to note that not all qualifying disabilities are listed in the Blue Book. If you have a condition that is not listed here, you can still apply for SSI or SSDI in Medina.

Can I Work and Still Collect Disability Benefits?

It is possible to work and still receive SSDI and SSI benefits but earning too much could prevent you from receiving benefits. Working while applying for disability benefits can make it more difficult to win your claim. If you are receiving SSDI payments, there is a monthly limit on what you can earn and still receive benefits. In 2025, if you earn more than $1,620 a month, you could lose your payments.
