The National Highway Transportation Safety Authority encourages drivers to know the extra precautions necessary for safely operating a passenger van. Most importantly, be aware of how you are loading the vehicle. The size, shape, and height of passenger vans make overloading more of a problem than it is for other types of vehicles.
It is also important to make sure that the driver is experienced in operating a passenger van or similar types of vehicle, and is aware of the adjustments to driving behavior that must be made to ensure safety. Side mirrors should be used more when changing lanes, and more space should be allowed on all sides of the van whenever possible. Drivers should also be aware that additional braking distance is required in a passenger van.
