Recently a 23-year-old man was accused of being involved in an accident in which alcohol was believed to have played a role. The early morning incident, some of which was recorded by a witness on a cell phone, occurred on the South Side of Pittsburgh. The driver struck seven cars, a fire hydrant, a telephone pole, a fence, trees and parking signs. The driver was eventually apprehended and charged with a variety of crimes.
According to eyewitnesses several people at the scene were placed on stretchers. Prior to being taken to jail the man was transported to an area hospital to be treated for a head injury. Other than the driver, the only other confirmed injury was to a 26-year-old man whose foot was hurt when the vehicle ran over it. According to reports he is expected to recover.
While it does not appear that anyone was seriously injured in this incident, the outcome could have been much worse. In drunk driving accidents serious injuries such as brain injuries and spinal injuries could occur. In the worst cases death is the end result. When catastrophic injuries or death do occur it is possible that civil lawsuits could be filed against the drunk driver to try to recoup damages for the harm or loss.
