Earlier this month, this very thing happened at a birthday celebration in another Pennsylvania city. A balcony collapsed sending the three individuals who were standing upon it at the time, to the ground four stories below. The building to which the balcony was attached has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The incident inflicted serious injuries upon several of the partygoers. Two attendees broke bones located in their backs. A third individual, a 22-year-old man, was hurt so badly that he died. His injuries were to his neck and head.
All three injured individuals were in their early 20s and likely believed they had long, promising lives ahead of them. Though unclear, it is possible that the injuries the surviving victims suffered could greatly impact the rest of their lives. If those injuries result in permanent disabilities their lives could be complicated and medical expenses could continue to accrue for years to come.
If this is the case, it is possible that they could decide to file a premises liability lawsuit against the individual or entity responsible for maintaining the building and balcony. Similarly, the loved ones of the young man who died could seek damages for his untimely death.
